Here is how it works: The valve sits on your main gas line. Inside, there is a little ball on a perch. If an earthquake of a certain magnitude shakes the building, the ball falls off the perch and blocks the pipe, cutting off the gas instantly. This prevents fires. 4. Cleanouts and Access

Yes, it is. In California, code usually requires the use of a distinctively colored primer (purple) for PVC and CPVC joints. The reason is simple: it allows the inspector to visually verify that the plumber actually used primer. If they used clear primer, the inspector couldn’t tell. It’s a visual proof of quality work.
- What is a “Graywater” system and do I need one?
Graywater systems take water from showers, sinks, and laundry machines and reuse it for landscape irrigation. While not mandatory on every single home yet, California code (Chapter 15 of CPC) is making it easier and encouraging builders to install “graywater ready” plumbing. This means running the drain lines in a way that they can easily be diverted to the garden later. It is a great selling point for eco-conscious buyers.
- Do I really need an expansion tank on my water heater?
Most likely, yes. A “closed loop” plumbing system (which most new homes are) traps pressure. When water heats up, it expands.
