When you build a brand-new single-family tract home, the underground plumbing is clean and simple. You dig a fresh trench straight to the street, drop in a 4-inch sewer pipe, and hook up to the city main. You start with a blank canvas.

With an ADU or an infill multi-unit project, you are almost never starting with a blank canvas. You are trying to plug a new building into existing infrastructure.

The first question your plumbing engineer has to answer is: Can we tie the new ADU’s sewer line into the existing house’s sewer pipe, or do we have to dig a brand-new trench all the way out to the street?
